Where do Llamas come from?
Llamas come from South America where it is believed that around 4,000 bc  they were domesticated  by a Pre-Incan civilisation. They continue to provide fuel, fibre and a means of transport to the people of the Andes

Why Llamas?
Llamas have become popular in New Zealand as their serenity and intelligence has been recognised.

Are there many Llamas in NZ?
There are thought to be around 500 llamas in New Zealand.

Can you ride them?
Llamas cannot be ridden. Their skeletal structure cannot support weight directly on their backs.

What do you do with them?
In New Zealand llamas are used for recreation, as pets
and are involved in therapy for children, as well as producing fibre.
